Hundreds of Puzzle Pieces on the Table and One Very Serious Little Judge
Hundreds of little pieces are spread across the wooden table, and Odessa has finally found the edge she was hunting for. She presses it into place with a careful fingertip, eyes narrowed in the focused way of a true puzzler. The kitchen around her glows with late afternoon light: a kettle on the stove, a potted plant on the counter, a loaf of bread, a basket of onions, a pair of glasses resting on a newspaper. Pip has claimed the chair beside her and sits upright with impeccable posture, watching every move with his scruffy eyebrows raised, as though he is keeping score.
Jigsaw puzzles are a popular pastime for good reason. They reward patience, offer a sense of steady progress, and give the mind something calm to focus on. They are also easy to share, whether with a visiting grandchild or a curious dog. If your pet likes to hang around the table, keep an eye on stray pieces, since cardboard bits are tempting to chew and a swallowed piece is no fun for anyone. Many puzzlers use a board or mat that can be covered or moved out of reach between sessions. Keeping the dog's own chew toy nearby gives him something acceptable to work on, too.
Pip seems content just to observe for now. Maybe he is waiting for the moment the last piece clicks in, or maybe he simply enjoys being exactly where Odessa is. Either way, it is a cozy kind of afternoon.
