The Sun Was Going Down and Pip Had Already Spotted Something Down the Lane
The sun is sliding low behind the trees, washing the dirt path and the white clapboard house in soft peach light. Odessa kneels beside Pip in her olive shirt-jacket, one hand resting on his back, smiling as she looks him over before they head out. His blue collar and leash are clipped on, his tail is up, and his ears are lifted in that keen, forward way that says he has already spotted something interesting down the lane. Pink geraniums bloom in a planter by the door, and a row of clay pots lines the edge of the yard.
Evening walks can be a great choice, especially in warm months, because the ground and air have cooled from the midday heat. As the light fades, it helps to make yourself and your dog easy to see: a reflective collar or leash, a clip-on light, or light-colored clothing all help drivers and cyclists spot you on quiet roads. Walk facing traffic where there is no sidewalk, keep the leash short near the roadside, and carry a small flashlight if you might be out after dark. For a curious terrier who loves to follow his nose, a sturdy, well-fitted collar or harness is a must.
Pip is clearly ready to go, and Odessa seems in no rush at all. That is the beauty of an evening stroll: no destination, no schedule, just a long golden walk while the crickets start their song.
