Grandma Set Up Her Easel to Paint the Garden. Her Best Subject Fell Asleep.

AI imageorange tabbypaintinggarden

Out in the backyard, a small wooden easel holds a canvas blooming with yellow and white flowers, and Grandma Hazel is adding the next careful stroke. Her white hair is gathered in a low bun, her green quilted vest zipped over a cream sweater, and her paint box sits open with smears of every color. Stretched out in the grass right beside the easel's legs, Marmalade has given up any pretense of art appreciation. The orange tabby is dozing with his eyes shut, paws curled under, soaking up the warmth. Clay pots, a blue watering can and garden tools fill the cluttered yard behind them.

Cats love to nap in sunny spots, and there is a good reason for it. Their bodies are comfortable at slightly warmer temperatures than ours, and a patch of sun is an easy way to stay cozy while resting. Cats often spend a large part of the day sleeping, so it is no surprise to find one dozing beside a quiet activity. If your cat spends time outdoors, a little supervision is wise. Some garden plants, including lilies, are very dangerous to cats, and paints, solvents and brush water should be kept away from curious noses. Water-based paints and closed containers make painting outdoors safer for everyone.

Painting can be a wonderfully absorbing hobby for older adults, encouraging patience and close observation. Having a calm, sleepy cat nearby only adds to the peace.

Marmalade is not in the painting yet, but if he keeps posing this beautifully, Hazel may have to add an orange cat to the flower bed.
