Grandma Settled Into Her Rocking Chair. Then She Noticed Who Was Below.
The old wooden rocking chair creaks gently, and on the floor right in front of its runners, Marmalade is fast asleep. The orange tabby is curled in a loose crescent, striped tail wrapped around his body, eyes closed and chin resting on his paws. Above him, Grandma Hazel rocks slowly in her green quilted vest and cream sweater, glasses on, gazing down with a quiet expression. Folded blankets are stacked on the couch, a potted plant sits by the wall, and soft light spreads across the worn wooden floorboards.
Rocking chairs and pets share a home happily most of the time, but the runners are worth watching. Cats and small dogs like to nap close to their people, and a tail or paw under a rocker can get pinched. Many owners place a rug or a pet bed just to the side of the chair so their companion has a cozy spot that is out of the way. Older cats in particular seek warmth and routine, and sleeping near a favorite person is a strong sign of comfort. Cats typically spend much of the day resting, so a quiet corner like this one is ideal.
For seniors, the companionship of a pet can turn a quiet afternoon into something warm and shared. A cat's slow breathing and soft purring can be very calming to sit beside.
Hazel will have to rock carefully today. Marmalade has chosen his spot, and he has no plans to move until dinner.
