Grandma Just Wanted to Drink Her Coffee in Peace. Marmalade Had a Schedule.
The porch boards are scattered with dry leaves, and Grandma Hazel has settled on the steps with her first cup of the day. She lifts the mug to her lips with both hands, a red plaid shirt peeking from under her olive quilted vest, and a spare pair of glasses pushed up into her white hair. Just below her, Marmalade sits neatly on the step, tail tucked, golden eyes turned straight up at her with an expression that says breakfast is overdue. Muddy boots, a basket, a watering can and a pot of rosemary crowd the doorway behind them.
That upward stare is something many cat owners know well. Cats often learn the household routine quickly and will remind their people when mealtime is near. Feeding at consistent times can help a cat feel secure and may reduce early morning demands. As for the coffee, it should stay with the human. Caffeine is harmful to cats, even in small amounts, and coffee grounds, tea bags and energy drinks should be kept well out of reach. If a cat ever gets into something with caffeine and seems restless, shaky or unwell, call your vet promptly.
A quiet morning ritual on the steps, with a warm drink and a familiar furry face, can set a gentle tone for the whole day. It is a small habit that brings real comfort.
Hazel will finish her coffee first. Marmalade is willing to wait, but only just, and he wants her to know it.
