Grandpa Dropped the Tailgate to Look Out Over the Field. Pepper Looked at Him Instead.

The pickup's tailgate is down, the field beyond is golden and brown with late-season grass, and Grandpa Kenji has paused for a quiet moment. He sits on the edge in a cream knit sweater vest over a denim shirt, dusty dark trousers and glasses, smiling down at his companion. Pepper sits beside him on the scuffed metal, her wavy black coat ruffled by the breeze, enormous ears flared and golden eyes looking up at him with complete trust. A wire fence, a few trees and a low sky stretch across the open country behind them.

Devon Rex cats are adventurous and people-focused, and some can be trained to enjoy outings on a harness. Open fields and farm settings, though, bring real risks for cats, including wildlife, unfamiliar dogs, vehicles and the temptation to dash into tall grass. A secure harness and leash are essential, and it is wise to keep outings short, especially in cool weather, since a Devon Rex's thin coat offers little warmth. After time in fields, check for ticks and burrs. Always look under and around vehicles before driving, as cats like to hide in warm, sheltered spots near wheels and engines.

Taking a break on a tailgate and looking out over open land is a simple, timeless pleasure, a chance to breathe and slow down.

Pepper seems perfectly happy out here, as long as Kenji stays within whisker reach. The view is nice, but he is clearly her favorite part.
