The Snow Started Falling Hard. Grandpa Kenji Lifted Pepper Up for a Better Look.

Snow is falling thickly outside, piling on rooftops, porch steps and bare shrubs, and Grandpa Kenji wants Pepper to see every flake. He holds her up to the window with both hands, beaming in a cream sweater vest over a blue plaid shirt, his glasses catching the bright winter light. Pepper stretches one paw toward the glass, curly black coat fluffed and golden eyes narrowed in fascination, her big ears tilted toward the soft hush of the storm. The neighboring houses are blurred by swirling white, giving the whole scene a quiet, storybook feel.

Watching snow and birds through a window is a favorite activity for many indoor cats. It provides mental stimulation and entertainment without the cold or the dangers of going outside. For a Devon Rex, whose fine coat offers little insulation, enjoying winter from indoors is especially wise. Window perches, heated cat beds and cozy blankets can help keep them comfortable in chilly months. Make sure windows are secure and screens are in good repair, and watch for cold drafts near glass. Keep antifreeze, de-icing salts and other winter chemicals well out of reach, as they are dangerous to pets.

Sharing a snowy morning with a pet is a small joy that can brighten a long winter, especially for older adults spending more time indoors.

Pepper has no plans to set a paw in that snow. The view from Kenji's warm hands is exactly as close as she wants to get.
