Grandpa Started a Little Shuffle Across the Kitchen. His Dance Partner Joined Fast.

Afternoon sun pours through the kitchen window, and Grandpa Kenji is doing a little shuffle across the tile floor. He wears a brown sweater vest over a blue plaid shirt and khaki trousers, glasses on, his face lit up with a happy, faraway smile as if humming an old tune. At his feet, Pepper trots alongside him with her tail held straight up and curled at the tip, ears forward and golden eyes turned up toward his face. Bananas, onions, a bowl of produce, a dish rack and a sunny potted plant line the counters of the lived-in kitchen.

A cat's tail held high is one of the friendliest signals it can give. A vertical tail, especially with a little hook or curve at the tip, usually means the cat is confident, relaxed and happy to see someone. Many cats greet their people this way, often while weaving around legs or trotting alongside them. Devon Rex cats are known for their outgoing, playful nature and are often happy to join in with whatever their humans are doing. It is wise to move carefully when a cat is underfoot, though, since tripping is a real risk for anyone, especially older adults.

Dancing around the kitchen, even just a slow sway, is a cheerful way to stay active and lift the mood. With a companion like Pepper, it never feels like exercise.

She may not know the steps, but her tail says she is having the time of her life. Kenji would not trade this partner for anyone.
