Grandpa Went Out to Shovel the Driveway. Pepper Had Very Different Plans for the Snow.

Fresh snow covers the driveway and the bushes along the fence, and Grandpa Kenji is out with his black plastic shovel, clearing a path. He wears a grey sweater vest over a navy jacket, black gloves and glasses, with a cheerful grin on his face. Just beside the shovel blade, Pepper has launched herself into the snowbank, front legs splayed and paws batting at the powder, mouth open and curly black coat dusted with white. Her huge ears are flattened with excitement. A trash can and a wooden fence sit at the far end of the snowy yard.

Some cats are fascinated by snow, but it is important to remember that a Devon Rex has a very thin coat with little insulation. Short bursts of play may be fun, but these cats can get cold quickly, so outdoor time in winter should be brief and supervised. Afterward, dry the paws and coat thoroughly. Ice-melting salts and chemicals on driveways and sidewalks can irritate paw pads and are harmful if licked, and antifreeze is extremely dangerous to pets. For older adults, shoveling snow is strenuous work, so taking breaks, lifting small loads and checking with a doctor about heavy exertion are wise.

Winter mornings like this, with fresh snow and a playful companion, can turn a chore into a happy memory.

Pepper is clearly having more fun than the shovel. Kenji may want to finish quickly and get his snow-loving cat back inside to warm up.
