Grandpa Otis Made a Big Bowl of Popcorn for Movie Night. Bear Noticed.
Movie night is underway, and the most popular item on the couch is a big ceramic bowl of popcorn. Grandpa Otis holds it in his lap with both hands, wearing an olive cable-knit cardigan and a gentle smile as he looks down at Bear. The black German Shepherd has pressed his nose right up to the rim, eyes soft and hopeful, mouth slightly open. A few kernels have already escaped onto the cushions, a pair of glasses rests on a knitted throw, and the room glows with lamplight. A plaid blanket, potted plants, a stack of books, and a remote control fill out the cozy scene.
Plain, air-popped popcorn in small amounts is generally considered okay for most dogs, but movie-style popcorn is a different story. Butter, oil, and lots of salt aren't good for dogs, and some seasonings, like garlic or onion powder, can be harmful. Unpopped kernels and hulls can also get stuck in teeth or pose a choking risk. If you'd like to share, set aside a few plain, fully popped pieces before adding toppings, and keep the portion tiny. A dog-friendly chew or a few of their regular treats is an even easier way to include them in the evening.
Bear might not follow the plot, but he's fully invested in the snacks. Otis seems to know he's been outnumbered on the couch and doesn't mind one bit.
