A Gray Day at the Beach Could Have Been Dull. Then Pearl Sat Down Beside Earl.

Salt air, gray clouds, and a wooden bench worn smooth by years of beachgoers. Earl has settled in at the edge of the boardwalk, his blue plaid shirt tucked under brown suspenders, and he is grinning down at Pearl like she just told him the best joke of the day. The white cat sits tall at his side, her long fur ruffled by the sea breeze and her golden eyes fixed on something far down the shore. Around them lies the clutter of a lazy afternoon: a canvas tote stuffed with odds and ends, a coil of rope, a water bottle, folded towels, and a pair of slip-on shoes kicked off on the planks.

Bringing a cat to the beach is not something most owners try, and for good reason. Cats tend to prefer familiar territory, and wide open spaces with crowds, gulls, and barking dogs can be stressful. If a calm, well-adjusted cat does come along, a secure harness and leash are a must, along with shade and fresh water. Hot sand and sun-baked boards can be uncomfortable on paw pads, so cooler, overcast days like this one are a better bet. Most cats are happiest when outings are brief and they have a safe carrier to retreat into whenever they want.

Earl does not seem to mind the gray skies one bit. He has a bench, a breeze, and a fluffy companion who stays close without being asked. For a day at the shore, that sounds like plenty.
