Dottie Opened Her Book and Began Reading Out Loud. Bean Couldn't Look Away.

Afternoon light drifts across the living room as Dottie opens a well-loved paperback and begins to read aloud. She sits on the couch in a soft gray cardigan, glasses on and mouth mid-sentence, a knitted throw bunched beside her. Frank leans close in a green hoodie and navy vest, following along over her shoulder with a gentle smile. But the most attentive listener is Bean. The black pug has nestled right up against Dottie's lap, his head tipped back and his big dark eyes fixed on her face, completely absorbed in the sound of her voice.

Dogs are very tuned in to human voices. Many will perk up at familiar tones and seem calmer when spoken to in a soft, steady way, which is part of why reading aloud to a dog can be such a relaxing ritual. Libraries and schools sometimes run programs where children read to patient dogs, because a furry listener never judges a stumble over a hard word. For older adults, reading aloud can be a nice way to keep the voice and mind active, and sharing it with a pet adds companionship. Bean may not follow the plot, but he certainly loves the attention.

Somewhere around chapter three, all three of them will probably be dozing. Until then, Dottie keeps reading, Frank keeps listening, and Bean keeps gazing up as if every word is meant just for him.
