Grandpa Ken Spent All Morning Stitching His Quilt. Yuki Spent It Very Differently.
Sunlight pours through the window onto a table piled high with fabric: floral prints, soft pastels, and patchwork squares waiting to be joined. Grandpa Ken sits with his glasses on and his head bowed, carefully stitching a pink and cream patchwork quilt by hand. He wears a green knit sweater vest over a plaid shirt. A basket of thread spools and a little pincushion sit at the front of the table. Just beside his work, curled into the softest part of the fabric pile, Yuki is fast asleep. Her pale spotted coat blends beautifully with the quilt squares, and her ringed tail curls loosely across the cloth.
There is a reason cats always find the coziest spot in the room. Soft fabric holds warmth and often carries the scent of their favorite person, both of which make a cat feel safe and relaxed. Still, sewing tables deserve some caution around pets. Needles, pins, and thread can be dangerous if swallowed, and a cat's rough tongue makes it hard for them to spit out string once they start chewing. Keeping a lidded box for pins and needles and checking the floor after each sewing session can prevent accidents. If you ever suspect your cat has swallowed thread or a needle, call your vet right away.
Ken stitches on quietly, careful not to wake his sleeping companion. The quilt will be finished someday, and when it is, it will be hard to tell where the fabric ends and the cat begins.
