Grandpa Ken Nodded Off in His Recliner. Yuki Stayed Wide Awake on the Armrest.

The television is off, the lamp glows softly, and Grandpa Ken has drifted off in his favorite gray recliner. His glasses are pushed up onto his forehead, his head is tilted back, and his green sweater vest rises and falls with slow, sleepy breaths. On the side table, the remote, a mug, a tissue box, and a spare pair of glasses wait for him to wake. But Yuki is not sleeping. The snow Bengal lounges across the wide armrest with her front paws crossed elegantly, her silvery spotted coat catching the lamplight, and her blue-green eyes wide open, staring straight ahead as if keeping watch over the whole living room.

Cats often position themselves near their people while they sleep, and many seem to settle into a guardian role. Lying close, especially in a raised spot like an armrest, lets a cat stay near her favorite person while keeping an eye on the room. Bengals are known for their alertness and curiosity, so Yuki may simply be enjoying the quiet before her next burst of energy. For older adults, a companion cat can bring a comforting sense of presence in the evenings. Recliners do have moving parts, though, so it is smart to check that no paws or tails are in the way before folding the footrest down.

Ken sleeps soundly, and Yuki remains on duty, unblinking and calm. When he wakes, she will probably act as if she has been dozing too, but for now, she is on watch.
