The Rain Canceled Grandpa Kenji's Garden Plans. Maple Had a Better Idea.

Rain pours off the edge of the porch roof in silver ribbons, and nobody is in a hurry to go anywhere. Grandpa Kenji leans back in a weathered wooden chair, his brown sweater pulled snug against the damp air, gazing out at the soggy garden with a soft, faraway smile. Maple sits right at his side, her red and white coat bright against the gray afternoon, ears perked as she follows every drop. Rubber boots wait by the steps, a blue watering can sits unused for once, and a basket of laundry has been rescued just in time.

Rainy days can be tricky for high-energy breeds. Siberian Huskies love to be busy, and a day without a long walk can leave them restless. Indoor games help a lot: hide a few treats around the room for a sniffing game, practice simple tricks, or offer a puzzle feeder that makes mealtime take longer. Many huskies don't mind a little rain at all thanks to their thick double coat, so a short walk in a light shower is often fine. Just dry them off well afterward, especially around the ears and paws, and skip outings when there's thunder or lightning.

There's also something to be said for simply sitting still together. Quiet time on the porch, listening to the rain, gives both dog and person a chance to rest and feel close without any agenda at all.

Grandpa Kenji doesn't seem to mind that the garden work has been postponed. With Maple keeping watch and the rain singing on the roof, this might be the best part of his day.
