The Flowers Needed Water. Maple Couldn't Take Her Eyes Off the Spout.

A silver stream arcs from the old metal watering can and splashes onto a bed of pink cosmos and orange marigolds. Grandpa Kenji, in a soft tan cardigan over a plaid shirt, tips the can with a satisfied look, and Maple stands right beside the flowers, mouth open in a cheerful pant, watching the water as though it might be the most interesting thing that's happened all day. Behind them, the potting shed is packed with tools, gloves, clay pots of succulents, and a folded plaid blanket.

Huskies and water can go either way. Some ignore it completely, while others love to snap at a sprinkler or splash in a shallow pool, especially on warm days. Because of their dense double coat, huskies can overheat in hot weather, so shade, fresh water, and cooler morning or evening activity are important in summer. Never shave a husky's coat to keep it cool, since that coat helps insulate against heat as well as cold. In the garden itself, it's wise to check that the plants you grow are safe for pets. Some common ornamentals, such as lilies, foxglove, and oleander, can be toxic if chewed, and it's good practice to keep fertilizers and slug baits stored out of reach. If you're unsure about a plant, talk to your vet.

Maple seems content just to supervise. A sunny patch, a few flowers, and her favorite person close by appear to be all she needs.

The flowers get their drink, and Maple gets front row seats to the show. Grandpa Kenji might even let her stomp through the puddle when he's done.
