Grandpa Kenji Sat Down on the Porch Swing for Five Minutes. Maple Had Other Ideas.
Somewhere between the second and third gentle sway, both of them drifted off. Grandpa Kenji has sunk into the striped cushions of the porch swing, head tipped against the backrest, glasses still on and hands folded loosely. Maple lies stretched across his lap and the rest of the seat, her chin on his knee, eyes shut tight, fluffy tail draped over the edge. The chains creak softly, a watering can and potted plants rest along the railing, and the backyard beyond is quiet and green.
Napping with a dog is one of life's easy pleasures, and the calm can be good for both. Dogs often sleep more than people expect, typically a good chunk of the day, with adult dogs napping between bursts of activity and older dogs resting even more. Huskies are an interesting case: they can go from zooming around the yard to sleeping like a log, which is why a good exercise session usually leads to a peaceful snooze. For older adults, sharing quiet downtime with a pet can feel soothing and companionable. If you share a swing or couch with a large dog, make sure there's enough room to get up comfortably, and use a stable seat so a dog jumping on or off doesn't throw anyone off balance.
There's a particular kind of trust in a dog falling asleep on your lap. It says they feel safe, settled, and exactly where they want to be.
The garden can wait and so can the chores. On this porch, the afternoon belongs to two very sleepy friends and the soft back-and-forth of an old swing.
