An elderly man in a green sweater holds a relaxed blue point Ragdoll cat in his arms at the bottom of wooden porch steps. 4 / 34

Misty Walked the Whole Way Around the Block. The Porch Steps Were Another Story.

Halfway to the front door, Grandpa Wen pauses at the bottom of the porch steps, cradling Misty against his chest like a sack of fluffy groceries. The blue point Ragdoll lies completely relaxed in his arms, her long tail hanging down, paws loose, and her blue eyes gazing calmly off to the side. He looks down at her with a soft, satisfied smile. Sandals and slippers are scattered across the steps, a basket of garden gloves sits nearby, and a green watering can waits at the corner of the stoop.

This floppy, go-limp-in-your-arms behavior is the Ragdoll's signature trait. Many cats wriggle when lifted, but Ragdolls often relax completely, which makes them famously easy to carry. Even so, lifting a cat correctly matters. Support the chest with one hand and the hindquarters with the other so the cat's weight is evenly held, and never pick a cat up by the scruff or under the front legs alone. Ragdolls are large, heavy cats, so for older adults, bending at the knees and holding the cat close to the body helps protect the back. If a cat struggles, let it down gently rather than holding on. If your Ragdoll is going outdoors for walks, a secure harness is much safer than relying on being carried.

Being carried is also a sign of trust. A cat that settles comfortably in your arms is telling you it feels safe with you.

Misty clearly considers this the best way to travel. Why walk up four steps when Grandpa Wen provides first-class service all the way to the door?
