Grandpa Dropped the Tailgate at the Edge of the Field and Sat Down

The tailgate of the old pickup is down, and Clarence has perched on its edge with his work for the day apparently finished. The truck bed behind him is a jumble of rope, a wooden crate, a water bottle and a pair of gloves, and beyond it a golden field of tall grass stretches out to a line of fence posts. He wears a sandy cardigan over an olive shirt, smiling sideways with crinkled eyes at Moonpie. She sits right beside him on the tailgate, chin lifted and ears wide, gazing out at the field like she owns every acre of it.

Rural spaces are full of fascinating sights and smells for a cat, but they can also hide risks. Tall grass and brushy field edges are prime territory for ticks, so a quick check of skin and ears after time outdoors is a smart habit, and your vet can recommend appropriate parasite prevention. Truck beds often hold tools, rope, fuel cans or chemicals that a curious cat could tangle with or lick. Wild animals and hawks may also be around, so cats in open country are safest close by, supervised or on a harness. For a hairless cat, the sun can be strong in open fields with no shade, so short visits in the cooler part of the day work best.

The field is quiet, the day is winding down, and Clarence has the perfect company for watching it go.
