Grandpa Was Just Trying to Wash the Car. His Cat Turned It Into a Game.

Water arcs off the bumper of an old blue sedan, beads rolling down the hood and splattering across the driveway. Hank holds the garden hose low with a big, mischievous grin, and it is easy to see why. Cotton is right in the line of fire, crouched and ready, paws reaching toward the sparkling stream, her wide blue eyes fixed on the droplets and her fur already spiked with wet. A potted plant, a flower bed and the front of a cream-colored house frame this lively driveway scene.

Those striking blue eyes on a white cat are worth knowing about. White cats with blue eyes are well known to have a higher chance of being born deaf in one or both ears, because the same genes that affect coat color can also influence the development of the inner ear. Many deaf cats live perfectly happy lives, relying on vibrations, sight and routine. Owners often use hand signals, flick lights or tap the floor to get their attention, and they keep deaf cats indoors or closely supervised, since they cannot hear cars or other dangers. If you are not sure whether your cat can hear well, your vet can check. And a little cool water play on a warm day is fine, as long as the cat chooses it and dries off afterward.

The car may end up cleaner, but Cotton is clearly getting the most fun out of wash day.
