The Rain Came Down Hard, and Grandpa Went Out to the Porch Anyway

Rain is pouring off the edge of the porch roof in silver sheets, and the yard beyond has gone soft and misty. Hank sits under the shelter in his olive shirt and denim overalls, glasses on, gazing out at the storm with a thoughtful, peaceful expression. Pressed against his side, Cotton sits upright and dry, her thick white coat fluffed and her golden eyes half closed as she listens to the drumming on the roof. Rubber boots by the post, a basket of gardening gloves, a blue watering can and potted plants line the weathered porch boards.

Many cats are fascinated by rain, watching drops fall and following the movement, though they generally prefer to stay out of it. A covered porch or a window seat gives them a front-row view without the soggy fur. Storms can be a different story, though. Some pets become anxious during thunder and lightning, showing it by hiding, pacing, panting or clinging close to their person. Providing a quiet, enclosed hiding spot, staying calm yourself and keeping windows and doors secured so a frightened pet cannot bolt are helpful steps. For cats who stay outside more, making sure they have a dry shelter is important, since a soaked coat loses its ability to keep them warm.

There is nowhere to go and nothing to do but listen to the rain, and Hank and Cotton seem to agree that this is the best kind of afternoon.
