Grandpa Went Fishing on the Foggy Dock. He Forgot All About the Fish.
Fog hangs low over the water, softening the far shore and the old pilings that march out into the lake. Hank sits on the weathered boards of the dock in his grey work shirt and overalls, a fishing rod propped beside him with its line trailing into the still water. The fish can wait, though. He has turned his attention to Cotton, reaching down to stroke her head with a gentle smile, while she gazes up at him with bright blue eyes and her white tail curled against the planks.
Fishing trips and cats can go together nicely, but fishing gear has some real dangers for pets. Hooks are a common cause of injury, especially when bait or a fresh catch is still attached, because the smell draws cats in and the hook can lodge in a lip, paw or even be swallowed. Fishing line is another hazard, since it can wrap tightly around legs or be eaten like string. Keeping tackle boxes closed, never leaving baited hooks lying around and collecting stray line before heading home help protect both pets and wildlife. Raw fish is also not an ideal snack for cats. If a pet gets hooked or swallows line, do not try to pull it out, and get them to a vet promptly.
No bites on the line yet this morning, but Hank does not seem to mind one bit with a companion like Cotton by his side.
