Every Night Grandpa Does the Same Thing Before He Goes to Bed
Bedtime has arrived, and Hank is taking the job seriously. He kneels on the floor in his plaid shirt and overalls, leaning over a plump round pet bed with a soft, lopsided smile. With careful, weathered hands, he smooths a cream knitted blanket over Cotton, who is snuggled down in the middle of the cushion with only her white face and front paws showing. Her green eyes are half closed and her ears relaxed, clearly approving of the service. A leash on a hook, a potted plant, a basket of laundry and a pair of boots fill the lived-in hallway around them.
A good bed matters to cats more than people sometimes realize. Cats sleep for a large part of the day, and they prefer spots that feel enclosed and secure, which is why round beds with raised sides, like this one, are so popular. The bolstered edges let a cat curl up and rest its head while feeling protected from behind. Placing the bed somewhere quiet, away from drafts and busy foot traffic, and adding a washable blanket that smells like home can make it even more inviting. Older cats with stiff joints often appreciate thicker cushioning and a bed placed at floor level so they do not have to jump. Washing bedding regularly helps keep fleas and odors in check.
Cotton is tucked in, the blanket is just right, and Hank can finally call it a night too.
