Grandma Just Wanted to Read the Morning Paper. Her Husky Thought He Was a Lap Dog.

Morning light falls softly over a cream sofa piled with knit throws, and Ruth has the newspaper open, reading glasses perched low as she scans the page. Her cable-knit cardigan blends into the blankets around her. Spread across her lap and half the couch is Copper, curled into a big, fluffy crescent with his head resting on her knee, eyes closed and his plush red and white tail swept around his body. A mug of tea, a basket of yarn and a row of houseplants on the windowsill make the room feel like a slow, happy weekend.

That curled-up sleeping position has a nickname among Husky fans: the Siberian swirl. In freezing conditions, Huskies tuck their noses under their thick, bushy tails, using the fur like a scarf to warm the air they breathe and conserve body heat. Many keep the habit even in a cozy living room. Lap-sitting Huskies are a bit of a funny sight, since the breed is far too large to truly fit, but plenty of them try anyway. Although they are known as independent, Huskies are pack-oriented dogs that generally enjoy being close to their family. Of course, a heavy dog draped over your legs is best saved for the couch, not for anyone with sore knees or hips.

The news can wait. With Copper snoozing on her lap, Ruth is not going anywhere for quite a while.
