Grandma Just Wanted a Clean Car. Her Husky Saw the Hose and Lost It.
Suds are running down the side of an old dark green sedan, and Ruth is leaning against the door with a yellow sponge in hand, smiling as she scrubs. Her oatmeal cardigan sleeves are pushed up, her glasses are speckled with drops, and her silver hair is coming loose from its clip. Down below, the hose has been knocked sideways, and Copper is having the time of his life. The Husky rears up on his hind legs, mouth wide open, snapping joyfully at the arc of water as it sprays across his chest. A blue bucket, puddles and a backyard full of potted plants complete the cheerful chaos.
Plenty of dogs love chasing the spray from a hose or sprinkler, and on a warm day it can be a fun way for a heavy-coated breed like the Husky to cool off. A little supervision keeps it safe. Car wash soaps, waxes and degreasers can irritate a dog's skin and stomach, so it is best to rinse soapy puddles away and not let the dog drink from the bucket. Gulping large amounts of water while playing can also make some dogs sick, so short play sessions with breaks are wise. A thick double coat can stay damp at the skin for a long time, so a good towel-off afterward helps prevent hot spots and irritation.
The car may end up only half clean, but between Ruth's laughter and Copper's splashing, wash day was a total success.
