Gus Climbed Into the Hammock for a Quick Rest. Someone Followed His Lead.
Fallen oak leaves are scattered over the patio, a watering can sits forgotten by the door, and nobody is in any hurry to deal with either. Gus has stretched out in a striped hammock strung between two trees, a pillow under his head and his hands folded over his shirt. He is fully asleep. Directly beneath him, Honey has flopped onto the cool ground with her chin resting on her paws, eyes closed, mirroring her person in perfect nap form. If one of them snores, the other probably does too.
Shared naps like this are more than cute. Dogs often choose to rest close to the people they are bonded with, and golden retrievers in particular tend to follow their family from room to room or yard to yard. Adult dogs sleep a good part of the day, and older dogs even more. For people, quiet time with a calm pet can be a genuinely relaxing routine. If your dog naps outdoors, make sure there is shade, fresh water, and a cool surface, since thick-coated breeds like goldens can overheat on warm days. Checking for ticks after lounging in leaf litter is a smart habit, too.
There is a to-do list somewhere inside that house, and it will still be there in an hour. For now, the most important job in this backyard is staying exactly where you are, and both of these two are doing it beautifully.
