Grandpa Hung the Clean Sheets Out to Dry. Honey Found a New Racetrack.
Gus has one clothespin pressed onto a fresh white sheet and a full basket at his feet, and he is doing his best to keep things orderly. Honey has turned the clothesline into an obstacle course. She has just burst out from between two flapping sheets, ears bouncing and tongue out, trotting straight toward the camera like she has won something. Potted herbs crowd the little yard, a watering can leans against the fence, and a pair of old boots waits by the laundry basket. The sheets are clean for now.
Golden retrievers were bred to retrieve game for hunters, and that working background gives them plenty of stamina and a love of play. Moving fabric, flapping in the breeze, can be irresistible to a dog with that much energy and curiosity. If your dog thinks the clothesline is a toy, give them something better to do on laundry day, like a tug rope or a quick game of fetch first. Daily exercise and mental games such as hide-and-seek with treats help channel that enthusiasm. It is also worth keeping clothespins off the ground, since dogs may chew them and swallow pieces.
Gus will probably end up rewashing at least one sheet, and he does not look too bothered about it. Some chores go faster alone, but they are a lot more fun with a golden blur racing through the middle of them.
