Gus Forgot His Pillow When He Lay Down on the Lawn. Problem Solved.

Somebody spread an old green blanket across the grass, and that was the end of the afternoon's plans. Gus is out cold on his side, his cheek resting right on top of Honey's furry back like she is the softest pillow in the county. Honey does not mind one bit. Her own eyes are shut, her chin is stretched out on the blanket, and her front paws are crossed in total relaxation. The wooden fence and the side of the house sit quietly in the background, and the lawn is warm with sunshine.

Resting together like this says a lot about the trust between a dog and their person. Dogs are most vulnerable when they sleep, so choosing to doze off pressed against someone is a sign they feel safe. Golden retrievers are famously affectionate and often seek out physical closeness. Gentle contact with a calm pet can feel soothing for people, too, and many owners say a nap next to their dog is the best rest they get. Outdoors, keep naps in the shade when the sun is strong, since dogs with thick coats can heat up fast and their noses and bellies can sunburn. Fresh water within reach is always a good idea.

It is not clear who fell asleep first, and it does not matter. The grass will need mowing eventually, but right now this patch of lawn has two very important residents who are not to be disturbed.
