An older man in glasses and a green sweater vest whittles wood on a porch chair while a cream Chihuahua watches the shavings. 4 / 25

Grandpa Started Whittling on the Porch. His Tiniest Fan Got Front-Row Seats.

Sitting on a weathered blue porch chair, Henry turns a small block of wood in his hands and draws his knife along it in short, careful strokes. Pale curls of wood are scattering everywhere, over his gray trousers, across the porch boards, and all around the small cream dog sitting at his knee. Peanut has her chin lifted and her eyes fixed on the falling shavings with intense concentration, as if she is counting each one. A pair of work boots rests by the screen door, and potted plants and a garden hose fill the corner behind them.

Chihuahuas are famously alert little dogs. They notice movement and sound quickly, which makes them excellent watchers and sometimes enthusiastic barkers. That curiosity is fun, but around hobbies like whittling it is worth keeping a careful eye on them. A small dog sitting this close can easily get bumped by a slipping hand or step on a dropped blade. Wood chips and splinters can hurt little mouths, and tiny dogs can choke on pieces that would not bother a bigger breed. Sweep up shavings when you finish, and consider giving your dog a comfortable spot a little farther back where they can still see everything.

Whatever Henry is carving, he has an audience of one who is completely invested in the outcome. Not every craftsman gets a fan club, but this one has a very small, very serious member.
