Grandpa Sat Down to Play His Favorite Song. The Low Notes Were Already Taken.

The old upright piano has seen a lot of songs, but probably never a performer quite like this. Henry is smiling as he plays, his fingers resting on the middle keys, gray cardigan sleeves pushed up just a bit. On the far left end of the keyboard sits Peanut, perched right on top of the low notes and gazing straight ahead with wide, dark eyes, a little bow at her collar. Every time she shifts her weight, a deep rumble probably joins the melody. A framed family photo, a pair of reading glasses, and a stack of magazines rest on top of the piano.

Dogs react to music in very different ways. Some seem soothed by gentle, slow melodies, while others find loud or sudden sounds stressful. Dogs hear higher frequencies than we do, so watch for signs of discomfort such as flattened ears, lip licking, yawning, or trying to leave. If your dog chooses to stay close while you play, like Peanut, that is usually a good sign. Do be careful about letting a tiny dog sit on a piano, since a fall from that height can hurt small legs. A chair or cushion right beside the bench gives them a safer seat with the same view.

Henry may need to adjust his arrangement to include a few surprise bass notes, but that is what makes this duet special. Not many pianists have a partner who plays with her paws and sits in the spotlight at the same time.
