Grandpa Needed Help Fixing the Fence. Two Very Different Dogs Volunteered.

One loose board on the backyard fence has become a whole afternoon project. Henry, in his glasses and a gray sweater vest over a blue shirt, is bent over a bucket of tools, working a bit of wire with his pliers while bent nails and a hammer wait nearby. He has two assistants. Peanut, his little cream long-haired Chihuahua, sits right at his feet with her head tilted and her big ears up. Beside her stands a much larger brown shepherd mix with a sturdy stick clamped proudly in his mouth, as if he brought the replacement board himself.

Small dogs and big dogs can be great friends, but it helps to manage their play with the size difference in mind. A Chihuahua is fragile compared to a dog many times her weight, and even a friendly paw swipe or a bump during play can cause injury. Supervise their time together, give the little one places to retreat, and step in if play gets too rough. Chihuahuas are often bold and surprisingly confident, so they do not always know their own limits. Around a work area, keep nails, screws, and tools picked up, since small dogs explore with their mouths and sit very close to the ground.

With one helper holding the lumber and the other carefully inspecting every move, Henry has the best-staffed repair crew on the block. The fence might take a little longer, but it will be fixed with plenty of company.
