Edna and Frank Went for Their Usual Sunset Walk. They Weren't the Ones Leading It.
The sky at the end of the road is fading into peach and gold, the porch lights are just coming on, and a quiet country lane stretches out toward the trees. Edna, with a small purse slung across her chest, and Frank, hands loose at his sides, are strolling side by side in their matching cream sweaters. Leading the way, a few steps ahead, is Duchess. She walks right toward the camera with her plume of a tail held up, a little bell glinting at her collar, and her flat Persian face wearing a look of complete authority.
Some cats do enjoy walks, but it works best with planning. Harness training, started slowly indoors, lets a cat get used to the feel before stepping outside, and a harness designed for cats is harder to slip out of than a collar. Keep walks short and in quiet areas, because traffic, loose dogs, and loud noises can frighten even a calm cat. Persians have a laid-back nature, but their flat faces can make breathing harder in heat or with exertion, so keep the pace gentle and avoid warm days. Watch for panting, which in cats is a sign to stop and rest.
Whether she is leading or simply tolerating her humans, Duchess has clearly made this evening walk her own. Edna and Frank seem happy to follow wherever she decides to go.
