They Parked the Old Pickup at the Edge of the Field. The Best Seat Went to the Cat.
The tailgate of the old pickup is dented and rusty, and that makes it the perfect bench. Frank and Edna sit side by side on the edge, knees close, smiling into the soft afternoon light with the easy contentment of people who have nowhere else to be. Behind them, a dry field stretches out toward a line of trees, and a cardboard box and a couple of bags sit in the truck bed from the day's errands. Duchess has taken the spot right in front of Edna, perched on the tailgate in all her fluffy white glory, gazing off to the side as if surveying her estate.
Bringing a cat along on outings takes a little extra care. Most cats feel safest traveling in a secure carrier, and a harness and leash are a good idea if they will be out in the open, since an unfamiliar place can startle even a calm cat into bolting. Fields and rural areas can hold ticks, burrs, and unfamiliar animals, so check your cat's coat carefully afterward, especially a long-haired Persian. Be mindful of temperature, as a parked vehicle can heat up quickly, and flat-faced breeds handle heat poorly. Fresh water and a shady spot keep a country afternoon comfortable for everyone.
There is no destination here, just a field, a truck, and a quiet hour together. Duchess seems to agree that this is a fine way to spend the day.
