Grandma and Grandpa Knelt Down to Water the Flower Bed. One Bloom Had Whiskers.

Down on their knees in the garden bed, Frank and Edna are giving the flowers a careful drink. He tips a dented galvanized watering can over the petunias and geraniums, and she reaches in to steady a stem, smiling over at the fluffy friend who has joined them. Duchess sits right at the front of the bed, a perfect puff of white against the pink and purple blooms, her pale blue-tinged eyes gazing upward as if posing for a garden catalog. Behind them, rakes and tools lean against the house and potted plants line the steps.

Gardening with a cat around is a great reason to choose plants carefully. Some common garden flowers are dangerous to cats, and lilies are the most serious example: even a small amount of pollen or a bit of leaf can cause kidney failure in cats. Tulips, daffodils, azaleas, and foxglove are other plants worth avoiding. If you are unsure about a plant, look it up before bringing it home or ask your vet. Also be cautious with fertilizers, pest sprays, and slug pellets, which can be harmful if a cat walks through them and grooms her paws afterward.

The flowers are getting watered, the sun is out, and Duchess has positioned herself as the prettiest bloom in the bed. Edna and Frank seem happy to let her have the title.
