Grandma and Grandpa Were One Word From Finishing the Crossword. Then Duchess Sat Down.
Today Edna and Frank swapped their usual cream sweaters for matching blue snowflake ones, and they are huddled shoulder to shoulder over the morning crossword. Frank has his pencil hand resting on the grid, Edna points at a clue, and both are smiling the way people do when an answer is right on the tip of the tongue. The breakfast table is a happy mess: toast with butter, a bowl of strawberries, a cup of tea with the bag still in, crumbs everywhere, and a basket of rolls. And in the very front, filling the frame with fluff, sits Duchess, golden eyes wide, ears up, looking extremely pleased with her placement.
Persians are known for their calm, people-loving personalities. Many like to be near their family's activities without necessarily wanting to be handled, which is exactly the energy Duchess gives off here. At breakfast, keep a few things out of her reach. Butter and milk can upset many cats' stomachs, and tea contains caffeine, which is not safe for cats. Grapes and raisins, which sometimes appear in breakfast breads, are risky for pets too. Keeping her own breakfast on a regular schedule often reduces table begging.
The crossword will get done eventually, but Duchess has already found her answer: the best seat in the house is right in the middle of everything.
