Grandma and Grandpa Rolled Out Their Mats for Morning Stretches. A Third Mat Was Taken.

Two green mats, two pairs of bare feet, and two determined stretchers. Edna and Frank sit side by side on the living room floor in their matching cream sweaters, legs out straight, reaching gently for their toes. Edna is smiling through the effort, and Frank is concentrating hard behind his glasses. On a third mat in front of them, Duchess has joined the session in her own way: body stretched long, front legs reaching forward, fluffy tail extended behind her, and a smug squint on her face that suggests she is the most flexible one in the room. Little tufts of white fur dot the floorboards.

Gentle stretching can be a great habit for older adults, helping with flexibility and making everyday movements feel easier. It is wise to start slowly, never bounce into a stretch, and check with a doctor before beginning a new routine. Cats, of course, are natural stretching experts and often stretch after waking. If your cat joins your floor routine, look around for small hazards first. Hair ties, rubber bands, and loose string are tempting to play with and dangerous if swallowed, and the colored pencils and supplies scattered nearby are best tidied away. Brushing a Persian regularly also cuts down on all those tufts.

Edna and Frank may still be working on reaching their toes, but their coach has clearly mastered the pose. Morning stretches are a little more fun when the instructor is this fluffy.
