Croissants, Strawberries, Coffee on the Patio. Grandma and Grandpa Forgot One Guest.
Breakfast outside is a special treat, and Edna and Frank have done it properly: buttery croissants, a dish of strawberries and blueberries, a pat of butter, and two big mugs of coffee on a little table surrounded by potted herbs and garden tools. They are grinning at each other in their cream cable-knit sweaters, clearly sharing a joke. The joke may very well be the enormous ball of fluff that has planted itself right at the front of the table. Duchess, her long coat a little windswept and shaggy, stares straight ahead with wide amber eyes and one big paw resting by the plates.
Outdoor meals with a cat around call for a little extra attention to what is on the table. Butter and cream can upset many cats' stomachs, and coffee contains caffeine, which is unsafe for pets. Grapes and raisins, sometimes found in pastries or fruit bowls, are risky as well. Croissants are not toxic, but they are rich and offer cats nothing useful. If your cat insists on joining, a few of her regular treats on a separate dish can help. Being outdoors also means watching for bees and wasps drawn to sweet foods, which can sting a curious cat.
Whether Duchess is angling for a croissant or just wants to be in the middle of things, she has made herself the centerpiece. In this family, breakfast is never just for two.
