After All These Years, Edna and Frank Still Split One Sandwich. Duchess Wants a Third.
One sandwich, two pairs of hands, and a whole lot of affection. Frank and Edna sit side by side on a weathered wooden bench in the front yard, both holding the same sandwich between them and gazing at it with fond little smiles, as if deciding who gets the next bite. Their matching cream sweaters make them look like a set. On the end of the bench sits Duchess, a magnificent cloud of white fur with a squashed, grumpy face and golden eyes that are definitely aimed at the lunch. A wreath hangs on the front door behind them, and potted flowers brighten the steps.
Cats can be surprisingly persistent about people food, but many sandwich ingredients are not good for them. Onions and garlic, which hide in many spreads and deli meats, are toxic to cats. Processed meats and cheeses tend to be salty and fatty, and many adult cats have trouble digesting dairy. If you would like to share a moment, a tiny piece of plain, cooked, unseasoned chicken or turkey is a safer choice, or simply offer a favorite cat treat. Persians are prone to weight gain because of their relaxed lifestyle, so keeping extras small helps them stay healthy.
Edna and Frank have been sharing things for a lot of years, so splitting a sandwich comes naturally. Convincing Duchess that she is not part of the deal might be a little harder.
