Ruth Took One Sip of Lemonade and Felt Someone Staring From Her Lap

On a warm afternoon there is nothing better than a tall glass of lemonade, and Ruth is enjoying hers slowly through a straw. She sits in an old wooden porch chair, a blue plaid blanket draped over the back, her green quilted vest unzipped in the heat. Pebble has claimed her lap, his round grey body settled heavily on her knees. He tilts his head all the way back to stare at the glass with huge amber eyes, plainly curious about what could be so interesting in there. Rakes and garden tools lean against the house, and pots of pink flowers brighten the railing.

Cats are often curious about whatever their people are eating or drinking, but lemonade isn't a good share. Citrus fruits contain oils and compounds that can upset a cat's stomach, and the sugar in sweet drinks offers them nothing useful. Fresh, clean water is the best drink for a cat, and some cats drink more when water is offered in a wide bowl or a flowing fountain. On hot days, make sure your cat has shade, a cool place to lie, and easy access to water indoors and out. Older cats and flat-faced or heavy-coated breeds can be especially sensitive to heat.

Pebble will have to settle for his water bowl and a cozy lap, which honestly seems like a fair trade. Ruth gets her lemonade, Pebble gets his shade, and the porch stays peaceful.
