Breakfast on the Patio Was Going Fine Until a Fluffy Face Rose Up
Scrambled eggs, buttered toast, avocado, and a warm mug of coffee are spread across the weathered patio table, and Ruth is enjoying every bite in the morning sun. She wears her olive quilted vest over a blue plaid shirt and grins toward the edge of the table, where her breakfast companion has arrived. Pebble sits tall right up against the tabletop, his fluffy grey chest puffed out and his nose angled ever so slightly toward the eggs. Crumbs are scattered across the wood, and the garden behind them is full of potted plants and a watering can by the fence.
A little plain, fully cooked egg is generally fine for most healthy cats as an occasional treat, since it's a good source of protein. The catch is in the extras. Butter, salt, onion, garlic, and seasonings often added to breakfast foods aren't good for cats, and some, like onion and garlic, can be toxic. Avocado is also best kept away from pets. Treats of any kind should stay a small part of a cat's diet so they don't throw off nutrition or add extra weight. If you like sharing, set aside a plain bite before you season your plate, and ask your vet if your cat has a sensitive stomach.
Judging by Ruth's smile, Pebble may well walk away with a tiny bite of plain egg. Either way, breakfast tastes better with a fluffy grey face across the table.
