Harold and Bev Fell Asleep Watching TV. Someone Stayed Up for the Ending.
The TV is still on, but nobody on the couch is watching it, except perhaps Duchess. Bev has drifted off with her head resting on Harold's shoulder, a soft throw tucked over her lap, and Harold has dozed off right along with her, glasses still on and chin dipping toward his chest. Their matching cream sweaters make them look like one cozy heap. Perched on the plush armrest beside them, Duchess the seal point Ragdoll sits wide awake and upright, front paws neatly placed, blue eyes staring straight ahead with total composure. A remote has slid down between the cushions, and framed photos line the shelf behind them.
It's common for a cat to keep watch while their people sleep, though there's a simple explanation behind it. Cats sleep in many short naps throughout the day and night, so they're often awake when we're not. Elevated perches like armrests and couch backs also let them see the whole room while staying close to their humans. For seniors who nap during the day, a calm, affectionate cat can be good company. Just remember that an animal sleeping near the edge of furniture may jump off suddenly, so it's wise to move slowly when you wake and stand.
Harold and Bev may have missed the end of their show, but they're in good hands. Duchess has the room under control and will let them know when it's time for supper.
