The Ocean Was Right There, but Moose Had Something Better in Mind
The boardwalk winds off toward the dunes and a pale grey sea, but Dot and Moose have found the perfect stopping point on a weathered wooden bench. Dot sits with her arm around her black Lab, wearing a tan quilted vest over a plaid flannel shirt, her curly white hair tousled by the ocean breeze. She's beaming. Moose leans his big head toward the camera, his amber-brown eyes soft and soulful, his glossy black coat gleaming in the overcast light. A row of potted plants lines the weathered fence beside them, and beach grass ripples in the wind beyond.
Beach days can be wonderful for Labs, who usually love both the sand and the surf. A few precautions keep the outing safe. Bring fresh water so your dog doesn't drink salt water, which can cause stomach upset or worse in large amounts. Rinse off salt and sand afterward to protect the skin and paws, and dry those floppy ears well. On sunny days, hot sand and boardwalk planks can burn paw pads, so test the surface with your hand. Also check local rules, since many beaches limit dogs to certain areas or hours, and keep your dog leashed where required.
Moose looks perfectly content to just sit and soak in the sea air with his favorite person. Dot seems to feel the same, and the ocean can wait.
