Dot Picked Apples From the Tree. Moose Had His Own Harvest Plan.
Sunlight slants through the branches of the old orchard, and the trees are heavy with red apples. Dot stretches up on her toes to pluck one more for her canvas tote, which is already bulging with fruit. She's wearing a tan quilted vest over a blue plaid shirt today, her white hair piled into a bun. Down below, Moose has his own plan. The black Lab has his nose buried in the grass among the windfalls, sniffing his way from apple to apple with total focus, his tail curved behind him. Fallen fruit and yellow leaves are scattered across the ground beneath the trees.
Many dogs enjoy apples, and a few slices of fresh apple can be a crunchy, low-calorie treat. The important part is preparation. Remove the core and seeds, since apple seeds contain compounds that can be harmful, and the core can be a choking hazard, especially for a dog who gulps like many Labs do. Fallen fruit in an orchard is another matter. Rotting or fermenting apples can upset a dog's stomach, and eating lots of windfalls can cause digestive trouble. It's best to keep a dog from snacking freely on the ground and offer a few clean slices from the basket instead.
Dot will head home with a full bag, and Moose will head home with a very satisfied nose. Maybe there'll be a slice or two of apple waiting for him later.
