Opal Sat Down to Watch the Sunset With One Cat. Then There Were Two.

Opal pulled her folding camp chair out into the backyard to watch the sky turn gold, and it turns out she isn't the only one who likes a good sunset. Butterscotch sits tall in the chair right beside her, his long ginger coat glowing in the evening light and his amber eyes fixed on the horizon. Snuggled against Opal's side is a second, slightly smaller orange longhair, a visiting friend we'll call Marmalade, looking just as fluffy and just as content. Opal, wrapped in a cream shawl-collared cardigan, gazes peacefully toward the fading light. Potted plants, a watering can, and a wooden fence frame the yard behind them.

Many cats are most active around dawn and dusk, a pattern called crepuscular behavior, so it's no surprise they'd want to be outside at sunset. Evening is also when wildlife and outdoor hazards pick up, so it's safest to bring cats indoors once it gets dark. When two cats share space comfortably like this, it's usually a sign they're well socialized with each other. If you're thinking of adding a second cat to your home, a slow introduction, with separate rooms, scent swapping, and short supervised meetings, gives them the best chance of becoming friends.

Two ginger cats, one golden sky, and a quiet backyard: Opal clearly has the best seats in the neighborhood tonight.
