Opal Closed Her Eyes for a Minute. Someone Else Had the Same Idea.
The TV screen has gone dark, the remote sits on the table, and Opal has drifted off right in the middle of the afternoon. She leans back in her overstuffed recliner with her glasses still on and her eyes closed, wrapped in a cream knit cardigan over a plaid shirt. Her grey curls are squashed a little against the cushion. Right beside her head, Butterscotch has curled up on the wide armrest, his long orange coat spilling over the edge and his fluffy tail wrapped around him. His eyes are shut too. A basket of yarn, a box of tissues, a mug, and a stack of magazines sit on the side table.
Napping side by side is a sign of a close bond between a cat and their person. Cats are vulnerable when they sleep, so choosing to rest right next to someone shows trust. Many cats sync their naps to their owner's routine, settling in when the house gets quiet. Longhaired cats like Butterscotch shed quite a bit, so armchairs and blankets they love will collect fur. A quick brushing a few times a week reduces shedding and hairballs, and many cats come to enjoy grooming sessions as a calm bit of one-on-one time. A washable throw over a favorite chair helps too.
Neither of them will be waking up anytime soon. When the house is warm and quiet and your favorite friend is beside you, an afternoon nap is the natural choice.
