Abuela Rosa Made Popcorn for Movie Night. Copito Had His Own Plans for the Bowl.
Movie night has officially started, and Copito already knows the best seat in the house is right next to the popcorn. Abuela Rosa sits back in her well-loved couch, gray hair pinned up in a loose bun, glasses perched on her nose, and a rose-printed apron still tied on from making dinner. She holds the white bowl low and steady while the little Maltese leans in, nose first, to inspect every fluffy kernel. A few stray pieces have already landed on the coffee table behind them, along with a scattering of toys and a cozy pile of blankets. Her smile says she has done this many times before.
Plain, air-popped popcorn without butter or salt is generally considered a safe occasional nibble for most dogs, but the movie-theater kind is a different story. Butter, heavy salt, and seasonings can upset a small dog's stomach, and unpopped kernels are a choking and dental hazard, especially for toy breeds like the Maltese with their tiny mouths. Hulls can also get stuck between teeth. If you want to share, offer one or two plain, fully popped pieces and keep the bowl out of reach the rest of the time. When in doubt about any human snack, talk to your vet.
Copito probably does not care what movie is playing, and that is fine. For him the feature presentation is a warm lap, a soft voice, and the hope that one more piece of popcorn might fall his way. Some evenings are made for exactly that.
