Abuela Was Just Hanging the Sheets. Then a Little White Dog Took Flight.
Clothespins in place, sheets snapping in the breeze, and suddenly there is a small white dog in midair. Abuela Rosa is pinning up a soft blue towel among a row of bright white sheets when Copito launches himself off the ground, all four paws tucked, ears flying, mouth open in a happy grin. Rosa barely breaks her rhythm, though the smile on her face suggests she has seen this routine a hundred times. A blue laundry basket, a broom leaning against the wall, sandals by the door, and a few potted cacti fill the little yard around them.
That burst of energy is classic Maltese. Though they are often pictured as lapdogs, these little dogs can be surprisingly playful and bouncy, especially when something moves in the wind. Short bursts of play like this are great exercise for a toy breed. Still, repeated high jumps and hard landings can strain small joints, so it helps to encourage play on grass or soft surfaces rather than concrete. Puzzle toys, short games of chase, and gentle tug sessions are good ways to burn off energy without as much impact. If your dog ever seems stiff or limps after play, check in with your vet.
The sheets will dry either way, and Copito has clearly decided laundry day is the best day of the week. With a helper this enthusiastic, chores are a lot less of a chore.
