Grandma Edie Put Her Feet in the Lake. Miso Had a Different Opinion About Water.

Grandma Edie has kicked off her shoes and let her feet sink into the cool lake water, sending little ripples out across the surface. She sits at the end of the weathered dock in a navy quilted vest and blue plaid shirt, glasses on, smiling down at Miso with a look of pure contentment. Miso sits right beside her on the dry planks, very sensibly keeping all four paws out of the water, with her chocolate ears pointed forward and her bright blue eyes turned up toward Edie. The far bank is lined with green trees and reeds, and the sky above is soft and cloudy.

Cats can swim if they have to, but most prefer to stay dry, and a deep lake is no place for an unprepared cat. If you bring a cat near water, a well-fitted harness and leash are a good idea, since a startled cat could jump or slip off a dock. Docks can also have splinters, nails, and fishing hooks lying around. On warm days, make sure the cat has shade and fresh drinking water, since lake water can contain bacteria or algae that are not safe to drink. Watching the water from a safe spot is plenty of adventure for most cats.

Edie splashes her toes, Miso watches the ripples, and the afternoon drifts by at the speed of the clouds. Some of the best summer days need nothing more than a dock, a lake, and good company.
