Grandma Poured One Glass of Lemonade. The Bichon Assumed It Was for Two.
Summer afternoons call for something cold, and Ruth has found it. She sips a tall glass of lemonade through a straw, lemon slices floating among the ice, while sitting on a shaded wooden porch. Cotton has pushed himself right into the foreground, his curly white face filling the frame and his dark eyes giving a soulful look that clearly asks whether there is any for him. Potted plants, a basket of garden odds and ends, and leafy trees behind the house make it feel like a slow, sleepy kind of day.
When it comes to sharing, lemonade is one treat that should stay with the humans. Citrus fruits are not a good choice for dogs, and the peels, seeds, and oils can upset their stomachs. Sugary drinks are not helpful either, and some sugar-free drinks contain xylitol, a sweetener that is dangerous for dogs even in small amounts. On hot days, the best thing to offer is plenty of fresh, cool water, a shady place to rest, and maybe a few ice cubes or a frozen dog-safe treat. Small dogs with thick coats can overheat faster than you might expect, so watch for heavy panting and bring them inside if they seem uncomfortable.
Cotton may not get a sip, but he does get the best seat on the porch and Ruth's full attention. With a cool breeze and good company, that sounds like a pretty sweet afternoon anyway.
