Grandpa Earl Read One Chapter Out Loud. His Persian Wanted to Hear the Rest.
A small lamp with a woven shade casts a warm glow across the cluttered corner of the living room. Earl sits in a well-worn green armchair, overalls on and plaid shirt rolled at the sleeves, reading aloud from an open paperback. Duchess has squeezed in right beside him, her fluffy white body tucked against the armrest and her face turned toward the pages, as though she is following every line. A basket of yarn sits by the chair, and a side table holds a plant, a pair of glasses, and assorted keepsakes.
Cats are often thought of as aloof, but many enjoy being near their people and respond to the sound of a familiar voice. Many owners notice their cats perk up at a familiar voice, and a calm, steady tone may help a cat feel relaxed. Persians in particular are known for their gentle, quiet temperament. They tend to prefer peaceful homes and predictable routines, and many are happy to spend long stretches lounging beside their favorite person. For older adults, this easygoing breed can be a lovely companion, though that long coat does require daily brushing to stay free of tangles.
Whatever Earl is reading, Duchess seems happy to hear it. Maybe it is the story, maybe it is the voice, or maybe it is just the warm spot on the armchair. Either way, this is a book club of two that works perfectly.
